Understanding Scabies: Symptoms, Risks, and What to Look Out For

Scabies: What You Need to Know

Scabies is a common but misunderstood skin condition caused by tiny mites that burrow into the skin, triggering intense allergic reactions. It spreads through close contact or shared items like bedding and clothing, and it’s highly contagious.

Symptoms include severe nighttime itching, red rashes, blisters, and visible burrows under the skin. Severe cases, like crusted (Norwegian) scabies, can affect those with weakened immune systems.

Treatment typically involves topical creams like permethrin or oral medications like ivermectin. To prevent reinfection, it’s essential to treat all close contacts and disinfect clothing and bedding.

While scabies itself isn’t usually dangerous, untreated cases can lead to secondary infections. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to a full recovery.

If you notice persistent itching and rash, seek medical attention. Proper hygiene, treatment, and awareness can help control outbreaks and prevent the spread of scabies.
