When Lena moved into the small apartment next door, she arrived quietly, without the fanfare of moving trucks blocking the street or friends laughing as they carried boxes inside. One afternoon, I simply noticed her unlocking the door for the first time, her arms full of grocery bags, her hair pulled back in a tired knot, her face marked by the kind of exhaustion that doesn’t come from a long day but from a long season of life. She smiled politely when she saw me watching from my doorway and introduced herself in a soft voice, apologizing for any noise she might make while settling in. From the beginning, she seemed careful not to take up too much space in the world. She kept her music low, her lights dim, and her presence almost invisible. A few weeks later, she knocked on my door for the first time, twisting her hands nervously as she asked if I could lend her fifty dollars to help her get through the week. She promised she’d repay me after her next paycheck. Her voice shook slightly as she spoke, and something about her vulnerability made it impossible to say no. It didn’t feel like a transaction.
