Barack and Michelle Obama Respond to Racist Video Controversy

The latest political firestorm involving Barack Obama and Donald Trump emerged after a racist video was shared from Trump’s Truth Social account depicting Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama as apes while the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” played in the background. The imagery, widely condemned as racist, appeared at the end of a longer video that made unsubstantiated claims about election fraud. The clip quickly circulated online, sparking outrage across political and social spheres. Critics argued that such imagery evoked a long and painful history of racist caricatures directed at Black Americans, particularly those in positions of power.

Supporters of the former president labeled the backlash “fake outrage,” echoing early comments from the White House press secretary, who framed the video as an internet meme portraying Trump as “King of the Jungle” and Democrats as characters from The Lion King. The explanation did little to quell criticism, especially given the deeply offensive nature of comparing the nation’s first Black president and first lady to primates—an insult rooted in centuries of dehumanizing propaganda. The White House later stated that the post had been shared erroneously by a staffer and was removed once officials became aware of its content.
