I was standing in the narrow daycare hallway, hemmed in by cubbies overflowing with tiny shoes and jackets that smelled faintly of soap and playground dust, when my phone vibrated in my coat pocket. It was the most ordinary moment imaginable, the kind you barely register because it happens every day. A teacher knelt to tie a loose shoelace. Another parent smiled politely while scrolling through emails. My son Leo stood beside me, gripping the handle of his red stroller with both hands, rocking slightly from heel to toe as he waited for me, his cheeks flushed from running around all afternoon. I pulled out my phone without urgency, expecting nothing more than a reminder or a work notification. Instead, the message on the screen seemed to drain all the air from the room in an instant. My husband’s name sat at the top, followed by a line of text so casual it felt almost unreal: he was moving to Spain with Claire, he had emptied our savings, and he wished me luck paying the rent. For a moment, the world tilted. There was no dramatic rush of emotion, no tears or gasp or collapse.
