Woman Plays Chess with Homeless Man in Park Every Day, One Morning She Finds a Note — Story of the Day

Every day, Jennifer played chess with a homeless man who shared his stories with her. One day, he borrowed money and then disappeared! In despair, Jennifer sat at the chess table in the city park. Suddenly, she noticed a piece of paper under the chessboard. It was a note addressed to Jennifer!

Jennifer’s heart ached from her father’s recent passing. The park, their shared refuge, was now a place of solace and pain.

Lost in thought, she noticed an older man playing chess alone. His nondescript, faded clothing and gray, unkempt hair belied the spark in his eyes. Every day for the past week, Jennifer had seen him there.

“Mind if I join you?” she asked.

“Of course not. I’m Tom,” he replied with a smile.

They played, and Tom shared stories of his past as an artist. “I used to paint landscapes,” he said. Jennifer was intrigued but skeptical.

One day, Tom seemed distracted and asked to borrow $50. Jennifer gave it to him without hesitation. The next day, Tom was gone, leaving only a beautifully drawn portrait of Jennifer and an address in another state.

Determined to find him, Jennifer embarked on a journey that led her to a small town and, eventually, to Tom’s niece, Cynthia. She discovered Tom had Alzheimer’s and was being cared for at a nearby nursing home.

Jennifer visited Tom with a new chess set, hoping to rekindle their connection. Though he didn’t recognize her, their shared memories lived on in her heart.
