Man Puts Old Grandmother in Nursing Home, Soon Learns She Inherited a $2.1M Mansion — Story of the Day

A man tricks his grandmother into an old age home to sell her house, but he’s in for a surprise.

Valerie Dumont, 87, was devastated by her son Larry’s death. Her only remaining family was her grandson, Steve. Six months after Larry’s death, Steve convinced Valerie to sell her house and move to Memphis. He promised she’d live in his guest house, but instead, he sold her house and deposited the money into his own account.

Steve drove Valerie to a retirement home, not his house. Heartbroken, Valerie realized she’d been duped. Her only comfort was Martin, a hairdresser’s apprentice, who visited her regularly.

Steve later learned Valerie inherited a $2 million estate in Germany. When he visited her, she revealed she’d revoked his power of attorney. Valerie managed her own affairs and lived happily for years. Upon her death, Steve received a $1 bill with a note: “Buy yourself a conscience.” The rest went to Martin and his family.
