A bullfighter fatally gored after tripping on his own cape reportedly spoke his final words in the arena.

The final moments of Spanish bullfighter Ivan Fandiño’s life are as tragic as they are striking, offering a stark glimpse into the dangerous and controversial world of professional bullfighting. Fandiño, a seasoned matador hailing from the Basque Country, was known for taking on bulls that many others avoided, earning both admiration and notoriety in the bullfighting community. In 2017, at just 36 years old, his life was cut short during the Aire-sur-l’Adour bullfighting festival in southwest France, when a routine performance turned into a fatal accident.

Despite the spectacle’s long-standing traditions, the inherent risks of the profession were laid bare in a harrowing instant, highlighting the fine line between skill, courage, and mortal danger in this centuries-old practice. On the day of the tragedy, Fandiño had already completed one earlier bout in the festival before stepping back into the ring for a second performance. It was during this later encounter that disaster struck. While attempting to guide the bull with his cape, Fandiño’s feet became entangled in the flowing fabric, a seemingly minor mishap that quickly escalated into a life-threatening situation.
