For six months, a silent biker with a leather jacket

For six months, my entire universe shrank to a single hospital hallway, a single room, and the relentless rhythm of machines that refused to let me forget that my daughter was both here and not here at the same time. Every beep was proof she was alive. Every beep was a reminder that she wasn’t living. I learned to exist inside that contradiction. My name is Sarah. I’m forty-two years old. My daughter Hannah is seventeen, and she has been trapped in a coma since the night a drunk driver ignored a red light and crashed into the driver’s side of her car. She had been driving home from her part-time job at the bookstore, five minutes from our house, on a road we had traveled together more times than I could count. One careless decision turned that familiar stretch of asphalt into the border between the life we had and the life we were forced into. Room 223 became my permanent address. I slept folded into a recliner that slowly destroyed my back. I survived on vending-machine food that tasted like cardboard and regret. I learned the staff not by their names at first, but by their footsteps.
