Why mosquitoes always seem to choose you over everyone else

Many people have lived through the same frustrating experience more times than they can count. A group of friends gathers outside on a warm evening, laughing and talking as the sun goes down. By the end of the night, one person is scratching their arms and legs raw while everyone else looks perfectly fine. It doesn’t seem to matter who applied repellent, who wore long sleeves, or who stayed furthest from the grass. The same individual always seems to be the target. Over time, this repeated pattern creates the impression that mosquitoes are making a conscious choice, almost as if they are singling someone out on purpose. While that feeling is understandable, the reality is both more complex and more fascinating. Mosquitoes are not acting out of spite or preference in the human sense. They are responding to a powerful combination of biological signals that some people produce more strongly than others. What feels personal is actually the result of millions of years of evolutionary fine-tuning that allows mosquitoes to identify the most efficient blood sources available to them.
