At Least Four Dead in Public Shooting as Community Reels

On Saturday, December 13, 2025, an ordinary winter afternoon at Brown University was shattered by sudden and terrifying violence. Students were moving between classes, studying in labs, and preparing for the final stretch of the semester when gunfire erupted inside the Barus & Holley engineering building, a familiar academic space at the heart of campus. The sounds of shots sent waves of panic through hallways and classrooms as people scrambled to understand what was happening. Within minutes, emergency calls flooded local dispatch centers, reporting an active shooter and multiple victims.

Law enforcement officers and emergency medical teams rushed toward the university, sirens echoing through Providence as campus life abruptly ground to a halt. Inside the building, chaos unfolded as students sought cover, barricaded doors, or helped injured classmates. By the time police secured the immediate area, two students had been killed and nine others wounded, several with life-threatening injuries. The wounded were quickly transported to nearby hospitals, where trauma teams worked under intense pressure to stabilize them.

As officers swept the building room by room, it became clear that the gunman had fled on foot, disappearing into the surrounding streets. What began as a routine academic day instantly became one of the darkest moments in the university’s history, leaving a stunned campus and a shaken city grappling with fear, grief, and unanswered questions.
