Tips for Safely Clearing Ice from Your Walkways This Winter

If you live in an area with cold, snowy winters, preparation isn’t just helpful—it’s essential. Each year, winter arrives with its familiar mix of freezing temperatures, heavy snowfall, icy winds, and slick surfaces that can turn everyday routines into risky challenges. In our region, snowstorms are common, and overnight freezes frequently coat sidewalks, driveways, and stairs in a thick, dangerous layer of ice. That’s why getting ready before the first snowfall can make all the difference between a smooth winter and a stressful one.

This year, I started my winter prep early. I dug out our snow shovel from the back of the garage, checked that it wasn’t cracked, and made sure the handle was still sturdy. I also inspected our outdoor lights and made sure the pathway to our front door remained well lit for darker winter evenings. Like many households, I automatically considered picking up a large container of road salt or ice melt as part of our winter supply list. For years, that’s been the standard solution—sprinkle some salt, melt the ice, and move on.
