In a historic landslide, New Yorkers have chosen 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani as the city’s next mayor, decisively defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
With over 97% of the votes counted, Mamdani secured at least 1.03 million votes— more than all other candidates combined — making him the first Muslim mayor of New York City and the first of South Asian heritage.
Just a year ago, hardly anyone had heard his name. But now, he’s making history.
At just 34,Zohran Mamdani has won the New York mayoral race, becoming the city’s youngest mayor in a century and its first Muslim leader.
”New Yorkers faced a clear choice – between hope and fear – and just like we’ve seen in London – hope won.”
