The Night I Learned the Value of Boundaries and Friendship

My friend invited me to a fancy steakhouse last night. Beforehand, I told her I couldn’t afford to spend $200 on dinner, so I’d just order something light. She laughed and said not to worry, that we’d just enjoy the evening.

Once we arrived, she went all out—an enormous steak, three sides, and a glass of wine. I kept it simple with a salad and water, quietly hoping the bill wouldn’t be awkward. When the check came, she smiled and said, “I’ve got this.”

I thanked her, both relieved and a little embarrassed. It reminded me how generosity can turn an uncomfortable situation into something warm and kind. Sometimes, friendship is worth far more than what’s on the plate.
