Urgent ‘do not eat’ warning over pre-cut vegetables that may contain paralysis-causing bacteria

Several varieties of pre-cut Japanese pickles have been recalled due to potential contamination with Clostridium botulinum, a bacteria that causes botulism.

The affected products, made by Choshiya Honten Ltd, include Shiba Zuke, Aokappa Zuke, Fukushin Zuke, and others. These items were sold in Tokyo Central/Marukai stores in California.

The recall was triggered because the products lacked the necessary “Keep Refrigerated” label, which could lead to hazardous bacterial growth if stored improperly. Clostridium botulinum thrives in low-oxygen environments, and even small amounts of its toxin can cause illness.

Symptoms of botulism include weakness, dizziness, and difficulty speaking or swallowing. The FDA urges consumers to discard the recalled products or return them for a refund. This recall follows a recent incident involving potentially contaminated canned tuna.
