I married the boy I grew up with in an orphanage believing we survived everything together

I am Claire, twenty-eight years old, and I grew up learning lessons no child should have to master so early. By the time I was eight, I had already lived in more foster homes than I could remember. Each one began with polite smiles and ended with lowered voices, packed bags, and the same explanation wrapped in different words: It’s not your fault, but we can’t do this anymore. Social workers praised my “resilience,” a word adults love because it sounds hopeful without requiring action. What resilience really meant was learning not to ask questions, not to cry too loudly, not to expect anyone to stay.

I learned how to keep my belongings organized so I could leave quickly, how to memorize new rules without protesting them, and how to detach just enough so that goodbye wouldn’t hollow me out completely. I stopped imagining futures and started surviving days. When I was transferred to another orphanage at nine, I assumed it would be the same—another temporary place, another set of adults who would mean well and fail anyway. That was where I met Noah, and without realizing it at the time, my entire understanding of family quietly shifted.
