Polar bear attacks woman who jumped into enclosure at Berlin Zoo

In 2009, Berlin Zoo became the scene of a terrifying and highly unusual incident when a 32-year-old woman climbed into the polar bear enclosure. During a routine feeding, the woman jumped into the icy water and swam towards the bears, who were distracted by the food.

One bear noticed her and attacked, prompting zoo staff to rush to her rescue. Despite several close encounters, they managed to pull her to safety using a life ring. She suffered multiple injuries but survived.

The woman, identified as Mandy K., had been facing personal struggles, including job loss and a painful breakup. Authorities emphasized that her actions were reckless, while zoo officials confirmed they would not alter security protocols, as determined individuals would always find ways to bypass barriers.
