7 Signs of Arthritis You Shouldn’t Ignore

If you live with arthritis, you likely know when to manage pain and when to call the doctor. But some signs may signal more serious issues. Sudden shortness of breath, easy bruising, or unintentional weight loss could be red flags. Here are seven arthritis-related symptoms that need attention:

  1. Joint Pain – Persistent joint pain, even if mild or vague, can be an early sign of arthritis. For some, the pain feels severe and sudden, like a broken bone.

  2. Swelling and Tenderness – Inflamed joints may feel warm, look red, and hurt when touched—especially in cases of rheumatoid arthritis.

  3. Stiffness – Morning stiffness that lasts more than 30 minutes could be a sign of inflammatory arthritis like RA, while osteoarthritis-related stiffness usually eases quicker.

  4. Grinding Sounds – Cracking or grinding noises when moving may mean cartilage is wearing down.

  5. Reduced Motion – Trouble fully bending or extending a joint often points to inflammation or joint damage.

  6. Referred Pain – Arthritis in one joint, like the hip, may cause pain in nearby areas like the thigh or back.

  7. Fatigue – Constant tiredness may result from inflammation, poor sleep, or limited activity due to pain.

Talk to your doctor if these symptoms persist or worsen.
