The apartment often smelled faintly of reheated dinners and laundry detergent that never quite masked the scent of stress. Bills collected in a neat, intimidating stack on the kitchen counter. The refrigerator hummed louder than it should have, as if it too were tired. Ever since his wife had disappeared three years earlier—leaving nothing but a short, vague note and an absence that felt louder than any argument—they had lived in a careful balancing act. Daniel had become everything at once: provider, protector, comforter, disciplinarian, bedtime storyteller. He learned how to braid hair by watching online tutorials at two in the morning.

He memorized spelling words and multiplication tables. He sat through school recitals alone, clapping twice as hard to make up for the empty seat beside him. But no amount of determination could alter arithmetic. That week, a fluorescent notice had been taped to his door: Rent Past Due. Final Warning. He had $413 in his checking account. The landlord needed $1,200 by Monday. So when a coworker casually mentioned that someone once found a rare guitar worth thousands inside a neglected storage unit, the idea lodged in Daniel’s mind like a fragile spark. It wasn’t hope exactly.
