REMEMBERING ONE TRAILBLAZING ACTRESS

Ellen Holly, celebrated for her groundbreaking portrayal of Carla Gray on “One Life to Live,” has left an indelible mark on the world of television. From 1968 to 1985, Holly made history as the first Black soap opera star, gracing 522 episodes.

Her talent extended beyond soap operas to films like “Take a Giant Step” and TV series like “In the Heat of the Night.” Holly’s determination to embrace her Black identity broke industry barriers.

In a video, she recalled her unconventional audition for “One Life to Live,” expressing excitement about the groundbreaking opportunity. Ellen Holly passed away at 92 on December 6, 2023, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire.

Survived by her family, including cousins Wanda, Julie, Carolyn, and Clinton, as well as grand-nieces Alexa and Ashley and their father, Xavier, Holly will be remembered for opening doors for actors of color, her impact resonating for generations to come.
