Living with a lazy husband is a comedy in slow motion, a series of small disasters, missed deadlines, and creative avoidance techniques that somehow make life both frustrating and hilarious at the same time. My husband, Tom, is a man of immense charm and surprising intelligence, but when it comes to household chores, deadlines, or even minor personal responsibility, he somehow transforms into a master of procrastination. It’s not that he is careless; rather, he seems to possess an innate ability to stretch a five-minute task into a five-hour odyssey. From the moment we wake up in the morning to the late hours when we finally collapse into bed, Tom finds ways to avoid work, delegate responsibility, or convince me that his half-hearted attempt counts as a full effort. The comedy of our life together often starts with breakfast. I’ll get up early to make coffee and breakfast for both of us, only for him to emerge in a daze, rubbing his eyes and asking if I “made enough for him too” as if the notion of preparing his own meal would never occur to him. Even when offered the simplest instructions—like placing a plate in the microwave or pouring cereal into a bowl—he approaches it as if he is solving a complex mathematical problem. The sheer creativity of laziness, I’ve discovered, is both a gift and a curse.
