For six months, I let my fiancé and his family believe I was exactly what they assumed: a naïve American girl dazzled by foreign charm, smiling politely while understanding almost nothing of what was said around her. They spoke freely in Arabic, confident their words floated harmlessly over my head, never suspecting I understood every syllable, every tone shift, every insult wrapped in laughter. From the outside, I looked calm, even cheerful, nodding along when conversations paused and eyes turned to me expectantly. Inside, I was listening, cataloging, learning far more about them than they ever intended to reveal. They joked about my hair, my accent, my “softness,” about how easily I would bend. They called me “the silly blonde,” said I was sweet but empty-headed, someone who would never fully grasp their culture or their expectations. What they didn’t know was that before Rami ever entered my life, I had spent two years in Lebanon teaching English, navigating daily life entirely in Arabic. I had argued with taxi drivers, debated politics with colleagues, comforted grieving friends, and learned the language not just from textbooks, but from kitchens, streets, and late-night conversations. I knew the gentle phrases and the cruel ones, the affectionate jokes and the cutting insults. When Rami first brought me home to meet his family, something in me hesitated.
