Am I Wrong for “Hiding” My MIL’s Birthday Present to My Husband after Finding Out What Was Inside?

Tired of her cold, callous mother-in-law ruining her husband Bill’s birthday, Lila decides to hide Carol’s gift. She wants to spare Bill the hurt and disappointment he feels every year from his mother’s thoughtless presents. However, when Lila’s secret is revealed, it triggers a series of events that lead to her being called out by the family.

Bill sat on the couch, visibly tense about his upcoming birthday. “Do you think she’ll care this time?” he asked, trying to sound nonchalant.

Lila sighed, placing a reassuring hand on his. “Maybe, but we’re celebrating you, not her. We’ll have a great time, no matter what.”

When Carol’s package arrived, Lila intercepted it, finding yet another thoughtless gift. She decided to keep it hidden, planning a perfect birthday for Bill. But when the truth came out, the family turned against her, accusing her of ruining the relationship. Despite the fallout, Bill realized it was time for new traditions, ones that didn’t hinge on his mother’s approval.
